Day 1:- An introduction to storytelling

Origin: therapeutic intentions to find one’s own voice and identity
Foster critical thinking
The structure of a story is based on ancient archetypes . Ex.: Plato’s The Cave
Different examples of DS
Aim of DS: share experiences and values, educate, entertain
DS term coined by Joe Lambert in the 1990s in San Francisco. https://www.storycenter.org/history
Golden rule of DS: show, don’t tell
Ice breaking tools: Dixit board game
7 elements:
    • Stories must be personal and authentic; it should be interesting; content must be engaging; use your own voice; importance of soundtrack; importance of rhythm; use metaphors and do not exaggerate.

How can I use it in my classes:

  • Focus more on storytelling than on technical skills

  • Media literacy

  • Emotional involvement facilitates memorization

  • Encourage collaborative exchange of knowledge

Day 2: origins of Ds. Focus on imaging
DS is deeply embedded in our daily life
Sharing images to share experiences has always existed: Grotta di Lascaux
Visual representation is part of our DNA.
Creation of symbols that become archetypical.
Standardised symbols are democratic because everyone understands them
Gestalt theory: Gestalt theory
Presentation of the European project CRAL: cral-lab.eu

How can I use it in my classes:

  • Too theoretical to apply. Useful as framework to get ideas for possible DS projects

Day 3: the narrative structure

Archetypes: original images and models in contrast with stereotypes, copies

The hero’s journey in 3 acts: set up, confrontation, resolution

Hero’s fatal flaw; the Achilles’ heel

Basic elements of a story:

- Setting: when and where. Cultural conditions

- Characters

- Plot

- Conflict (challenge, problem)

- Theme: idea, conviction, insight

- Style: word choice, structure, tone.

The Pixar storytelling formula: write about feelings you know. A good story is emotional. Look around you.

Start with the world of the character

How can I use it in my classes:

  • Prepare a project for my C2 monographic in which students will have to apply all these techniques in order to tell a story.

Day 4: story board

Day 5: video editing

Collected pictures and video previously taken

Matched the images to the script

Decided if there were actors, voice over, soundtrack, etc…

Edited video
